Nourishing New Brighton

A Fresh Approach to Community Food

This program is  designed to support the welfare of families, elderly individuals, and young people who struggle to afford adequate nutrition due to the high cost of living. These community groups often refrain from seeking assistance at food banks and, instead, forgo meals to meet their basic living expenses.

The program facilitates the direct purchase of fresh produce at cost prices from local growers and wholesalers. These goods are efficiently pre-packaged and distributed by local volunteers. Through this community scheme, we are able to offer high-quality food at a reduced cost. This initiative directly benefits  community members, and allows the community to take control of food costs.

The launch of this program is in response to the New Zealand Government's call to review the substantial profits generated by the grocery market from the sale of essential products at elevated prices. The New Brighton Community aims to address the issue of food affordability by eliminating traditional retail-associated costs within the grocery supply chain. "Te Peke Kai" represents a grassroots movement through which the community can establish an alternative food supply system, owned and governed by the community itself.

We would like to hear from anyone who is interested to be part of this movement. Join us by subscribing to Te Peke Kai deliveries.

Bringing Local Growers Closer to Home

The shop on Saturdays offers a diverse range of fresh produce selected to meet the quality standards. But what's even more exciting is the affordability factor. Fresh produce straight from local growers are available at $5, $10 or $15 per bag. Veggie bags packed with goodness at affordable prices are ordered weekly online.

This not only makes healthy eating more accessible but also supports our local agricultural heroes.

Empowering a Healthier Lifestyle

At its core, Te Pēke Kai is about community empowerment.  People should not be deprived of healthy nutrition. It's about empowering New Brighton residents to have control over healthier food choices. It's about empowering local growers to share their bounty with the community. It's about empowering the community as a whole to live better and healthier lives.

The idea is simple but powerful: when you have easy access to fresh, nutritious produce, you're more likely to incorporate it into your daily diet. It's a small step that can have a significant impact on your health and well-being.  Left overs from the shop are shared with New Brighton Food bank, helping more people to live better lives.
