CEAT Funding Project
Set Up Phase

2 million dollars has been set aside by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust (CEAT) for projects that will improve social and/or economic outcomes for the Greater Brighton community.

Our role in this project has been to engage and consult with the community in order to establish a Community Leadership Group to lead and represent the community, on how the money should be spent, taking into account priorities and a potential vision identified through by the community through the engagement process. This Community Leadership Group is now established and is  in the process of establishing the process and connections for the community to identify and access funding that will meet the vision and priorities established by the community..

We used community led development (CLD) principles when supporting and funding this project(s).These eneral principles are:

  • Shared local visions or goals drive action and change

  • Use existing strengths and assets

  • Many people and groups work together

  • Building diverse and collaborative local leadership

  • Adaptable planning and action informed by outcomes

A Community Leadership Group has now been established, and is continuing this project into its next phase, now called Greater New Brighton.

Thematic Report

This document was commissioned by the Department of Internal Affairs for its New Brighton Community Led Development project.

The aim was to identify what is important to the community of Greater Brighton by drawing on already existing data to analyse what is currently known about the needs of residents following the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010/2011.

Over two hundred community organisations and individuals were contacted by email and invited to identify documents reporting on post-quake surveys, consultations, discussions, workshops and forums that have drawn on input from residents. Local government sources were also consulted as were some government agencies.
