The Old School
Te Kura Tawhito
- A creative and wellbeing hub on the former Central New Brighton School site -
Central New Brighton School proudly played a fundamental role in the New Brighton community for 125 years, and its closure impacted on a great deal of people. The site holds within its walls countless stories and memories that will be treasured and shared by families, and the whole community, for generations to come.
For the next two years or so Renew Brighton has been offered the Central New Brighton School site, on behalf of the New Brighton community, whilst the longer term future of the site is established. Note: We have not been offered the pool or hall.
Over a series of workshops last year we had a lot of individuals and groups express an interest in using the site for different activities, many with a creative focus. An eclectic hub of art, wellbeing, education and more... To be imagined and evolved by the community, for the community.
In re-opening the school site we have a chance to come together, to grow in strength and to steer the ship in a positive direction towards a common goal of greater connection and sustaining aroha. Our mission is to welcome everyone to take part and take pride in stimulating change in ourselves and in our community.

Updates on the Sale of the School and Hall
In November 2018 we were told that the whole Central New Brighton School site – including the Roy Stokes Hall – would be on the market in February 2018.
The Hall was built after an enormous fundraising effort from the School Committee. Hundreds of people contributed to its construction. The Old School Community Hub had just opened on the school site in October 2017 following a year of preparation. The Christchurch Circus School operates out of the Hall.
As as result we ran a public awareness campaign and collected 329 letters that asked that the sale be paused while the community considers what the future of the site could be. We sent these in early December 2017 and as of 7th February 2018 we have not had any type of response from the Ministry of Education.
